Before I was even a teenager, my obsession with abandoned homes began, but over the past 10 years I’ve started spending a lot of time in the abandoned graveyards next to those homes. My grandparents held off accepting the resettlement money (500 dollars) for as long as they could. My Nan didn’t want to leave and I always wondered if Elizabeth was the reason. They didn’t have a lot of money, so no headstone was erected in her honour. Instead, my Nan left her to rest under an Elderberry bush. There are so many children buried on the shores of Newfoundland in the those small abandoned communities. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for those families to not only lose their children but then have to leave them behind. Most of the headstones in that graveyard are long gone. The elderberry bush is standing tall.
